About this qualification

The Advanced Façade Consultant Diploma is a comprehensive six-month structured learning programme developed to provide construction professionals with advanced technical expertise in the design, assessment, inspection, remediation and management of building façades. As building envelopes become increasingly sophisticated and regulatory requirements continue to evolve, the need for competent façade consultants has never been greater.

This diploma has been designed for professionals seeking to progress into senior technical, consultancy and leadership roles within the façade and building envelope sector. It provides an in-depth understanding of façade systems, materials, performance, compliance and risk management, enabling delegates to provide expert advice throughout the lifecycle of both new-build and existing buildings.

The programme examines the full range of façade systems used across the UK construction industry, including rainscreen cladding, curtain walling, masonry façades, brick-slip systems, insulated render systems, precast concrete panels, glazed façades, timber cladding, natural stone, metal composite systems and hybrid building envelope solutions. Delegates will gain a detailed understanding of how these systems are designed, specified, installed, inspected, maintained and remediated.

A significant element of the diploma focuses on building safety, including the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations, competency requirements, the Building Safety Regulator, Construction Products Regulations, UKCA marking, the Golden Thread of Information and the responsibilities of dutyholders throughout the design and construction process.

Fire performance is explored in depth, covering external fire spread, façade fire behaviour, reaction to fire, cavity barriers, fire stopping interfaces, façade remediation strategies, material classifications, testing standards and lessons learned from major façade failures. Delegates will develop the knowledge required to assess façade systems from both a fire safety and compliance perspective.

The diploma also covers structural behaviour, wind loading, thermal movement, moisture penetration, condensation control, thermal bridging, airtightness, acoustics, weather resistance, durability and long-term asset performance. Delegates will learn how environmental conditions, design decisions and workmanship influence the performance and longevity of external wall systems.

Practical inspection and consultancy skills form a core part of the programme. Delegates will undertake detailed façade inspections, condition surveys, defect diagnosis, specification reviews, installation audits, quality assurance inspections and remediation planning exercises. The programme develops the ability to prepare professional technical reports, provide evidence-based recommendations and advise clients on risk management and compliance.

Building pathology is integrated throughout the diploma, enabling delegates to investigate façade failures, identify root causes of defects and recommend appropriate repair or replacement solutions. Real-world case studies are used extensively to examine common issues including water ingress, corrosion, structural movement, inadequate compartmentation, poor workmanship, incompatible materials and premature façade deterioration.

The structured learning format combines tutor-led workshops, guided study, online learning resources, technical assignments, workplace application, case studies and independent research. This flexible approach enables delegates to develop advanced specialist knowledge while continuing in full-time employment.

The diploma places strong emphasis on professional judgement, critical thinking and multidisciplinary collaboration, preparing delegates to work confidently with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, building owners and regulatory bodies on complex façade projects.

Before you apply

Entry requirements

The Advanced Façade Consultant Diploma is an advanced-level programme intended for experienced professionals working within the construction and built environment sector. Applicants should have a sound understanding of construction methods, building technology and quality management principles, together with relevant industry experience.

Applicants should meet one of the following recommended entry requirements:

A Level 4 qualification (or above) in a construction-related discipline; or Successful completion of the ACQP Advanced Façade Consultant Certificate (or an equivalent recognised qualification); or A minimum of 3 years' relevant industry experience in construction, surveying, façade engineering, architecture, project management or building inspection; or Membership of a recognised professional body within the built environment (such as CIOB, CABE, RICS, CIAT, ICE, ICWCI or IStructE), together with relevant industry experience.

Assessment

How you will be assessed

The Advanced Façade Consultant Diploma is assessed through a combination of continuous assessment, practical application and final evaluation. The assessment strategy has been designed to ensure delegates can demonstrate both technical knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge in real-world façade consultancy and building envelope projects.

Rather than relying on a single examination, delegates will complete a series of assessments throughout the six-month programme, allowing them to progressively build their competence and professional portfolio.

Assessment Methods

The diploma is assessed through a combination of:

Module Knowledge Assessments – Online multiple-choice and short written assessments completed at the end of each learning module. Technical Assignments – Detailed assignments requiring delegates to interpret technical drawings, review specifications, assess façade systems and provide professional recommendations. Case Study Evaluations – Analysis of real façade projects involving design, construction, inspection, fire safety, defects and remediation strategies. Façade Inspection Report – Preparation of a comprehensive professional inspection report based on a real or simulated project, including photographic evidence, defect analysis and recommendations. Building Pathology Investigation – Investigation of façade defects to identify root causes, assess risks and propose appropriate remedial solutions. Regulatory Compliance Review – Assessment of a façade project against current legislation, Building Regulations and relevant British Standards. Professional Consultancy Report – Production of a client-ready technical report covering compliance, quality, performance, risk management and recommendations. Final Diploma Assessment – A comprehensive written assessment designed to evaluate the delegate's overall understanding of façade consultancy principles, technical standards and professional practice.
