The Introduction to Principal Designer & Principal Contractor Roles course is a comprehensive one-day programme designed to introduce construction professionals to the statutory duties and responsibilities of Principal Designers (PDs) and Principal Contractors (PCs) within the UK construction industry.
Effective coordination between designers, contractors and clients is fundamental to delivering safe, compliant and well-managed construction projects. Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015), Principal Designers and Principal Contractors play a critical role in planning, managing, monitoring and coordinating health and safety throughout a project's lifecycle.
This course provides delegates with a clear understanding of the legal framework governing these roles, including the duties placed upon clients, designers, contractors and other dutyholders. It explains how the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor work together to identify, eliminate and manage risks during both the design and construction phases.
The programme also introduces delegates to the additional responsibilities introduced through the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Building Regulations, particularly for Higher-Risk Buildings, where competence, collaboration, record keeping and the Golden Thread of Information have become increasingly important.
Throughout the course, delegates will examine the responsibilities associated with pre-construction planning, design risk management, construction phase planning, coordination of contractors, communication between project teams, temporary works, site management, competence requirements and the preparation of statutory documentation.
Practical examples and case studies are used to demonstrate how poor planning and ineffective coordination can lead to accidents, project delays, enforcement action and increased costs. Delegates will also review examples of good practice that support safer and more efficient project delivery.
